At the end of the 18th century Mozart perfected Opera Buffa. In the early 19th century the influence of Romanticism gave rise to the works of Weber and Meyerbeer, while the Italian Bel Canto tradition was maintained by Bellini, Rossini, and Donizetti. In the mid-19th century the musical and dramatic elements of opera were combined by Wagner in his opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (1869–76) and his subsequent operas. Verdi extended the emotional and dramatic range of Italian opera. The realism of Bizet’s Carmen (1875) influenced Leoncavallo, Mascagni, and Puccini. In the 20th century a wide variety of operatic styles have flourished, including the dramatic realism of Janácek and the neoclassicism of Stravinsky.

Giacomo Puccini - Puccini was born in Lucca on the 22nd of December 1858, he was the last of the great Italian composers. Puccini, along with his brother Michele, who died young, were the fifth generation of a family of professional musicians and composers, living and working in and around Lucca, Tuscany Italy.  - Translation - No One Sleeps

The Prince Sings

Nessun dorma, nessun dorma ...
Tu pure, o Principessa,
Nella tua fredda stanza,
Guardi le stelle
Che tremano d'amore
E di speranza.

No one sleeps, no one sleeps...
Even you, o Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,
Il nome mio nessun saprà, no, no,
Sulla tua bocca lo dirò
Quando la luce splenderà,
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
Che ti fa mia.
But my secret is hidden within me;
My name no one shall know, no, no,
On your mouth I will speak it
When the light shines,
And my kiss will dissolve the silence
That makes you mine.

Chorus

Il nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè, morir.

Chorus

No one will know his name
And we must, alas, die.

Le Principe

Dilegua, o notte!
Tramontate, stelle!
All'alba vincerò! vincerò! vincerò!

The Prince

Vanish, o night!
Sunset, stars!
At daybreak, I shall conquer! Conquer!

Look into Puccini's eyes, look into his soul at the moment this photo was taken. Where does he sing now?
